Discovery Group FAQs

  • We believe the opposite of addiction is community. We found that most traditional ‘recovery’ groups can be overly formal, scary, and ‘punishment focussed’ places to visit. Our informal & easy-going social discovery groups aim to change that.

Our weekly groups are held in privately-hired cafe’s & restaurants enabling you to hang out, make new friends & build community in a relaxed way. This can be done by connecting with other discovery champions at the events so that that you can share your knowledge & journey together. We also develop knowledge & self-management skills each week through our unique discovery games & group activities. These are are visual, creative, and easy to get involved in if you want.

Everyone is welcome to hang out after the group and socialise.

  • The groups have an informal, easy-going vibe. We encourage people to arrive 15-30 mins early to grab hot or soft drinks, snacks & socialise.

Once we’re all ready, we put our chairs in a circle and begin! We start by everyone having an opportunity to introduce themselves and ‘check in’ with anything thats on their mind. People can ask questions and discuss any points, feelings or thoughts raised. We will then focus on a group ‘discovery game’. (more info on these below). Once that’s done we have an opportunity to discuss anything that comes up for us during the game. We then take turns to ‘check out’ with anything that’s on our minds at this time.

Everyone is welcome to stay after the group for more tea, snacks and to chat and exchange numbers. We really encourage this!

  • Discovery Games are unique group activities aimed at developing knowledge & self management skills in a relaxed way. Our signature! These are are visual, creative, and easy to get involved in if you want. Come along and give it a go!

We also play a range of casual games such as darts, table football etc.

  • Yes. Or at least not have used that day. This helps keep other attendees safe and sober too.

  • 15 people maximum. Sometimes much less. We keep the groups small so that it’s easier to get to know people week by week.

  • We encourage curiosity. Some programs restrict ‘cross-sharing’ or ‘open sharing’ in groups. We don’t, as long as it’s coming from a place of honest & kind curiosity, (rather than judgement or advice). So, once someone has shared we encourage ‘Discovery Questions’ . These are kind and compassionate questions aimed to help the person discover a new angle, or help them explore it further…

Our volunteers will help everyone along with guiding these questions and there’s no pressure to ask one!

  • Yes! Thats the idea here! We really encourage people to return weekly and consider building this into their discovery journey if possible. The idea is to build community, make new friends and develop new skills. That can take time so please do keep coming back!

  • You don’t need to bring anything except open-mindedness and a willingness to do your best to join in. This makes a better experience for everyone possible. You can wear what your normally wear :)

  • In some programs people who misuse drugs or alcohol or have mental health are called ‘addicts’. We call them ‘Discovery Champions’. We aim to support anyone on their brave journey of discovery.

  • We may be able to help depending on your needs. Have a look at our opportunities page. Please speak to one of our discovery volunteers after a group or social event.

  • Yes! This is a privately funded community project. We work in partnership with cafes, restaurants, food & drink companies to provide this service, and are run entirely by volunteers.

Everything is free including tea and snacks!

  • Yes! If you’re in a day program, AA, SMART, rehab, or in any religion or other, you’re welcome! Discovery Socials can be a nice community ‘add-on’ to any discovery journey.

  • We understand that new social events can be daunting and we welcome everyone. We want the best experience for everyone who shows up and everyone is encouraged to participate as best they can. It can take a few weeks to build confidence so please don’t give up! We don’t judge :)

  • We’re happy to help! Please email us for a fast response. (Open Mon-Friday 10am-6pm).
